BUT if gparted is showing an incorrect size too (144115188.1 GB) there's probably some other problem (the drive itself or controller?, the usb cable?). If it's for linux-only, ext4 may be better, to retain file permissions properly. If you're going to use the external drive in other non-linux systems, ntfs is probably the better choice (or even fat32 but that has a major limitation: no single file over 4gb).
Choose what partition type you want to use (probably either ntfs or ext4).
